Psychedelic Reckonings 2024
This fall 2024 conference at UC Berkeley will investigate the increasing salience of multiple figures of ancestry, inheritance and transmission – across bodies, generations, humans and more-than-human-others, the living and the dead – to psychedelic and plant medicine culture in the contemporary United States and beyond.
Lineage, Initiation, & Oracle: THE ART OF THE CREATIVE DESCENT
Ancestral (or “intergenerational”) trauma is having a moment as awareness of our hidden wounds and biases bubbles up through the cultural discourse. But when journalist and memoirist Seth Lorinczi began investigating his own family secrets, the only way into deeper understanding was a terrifying—but transformative—descent into the shadowy byways of underground psychedelic therapy. The result is his recently published Death Trip: A Post-Holocaust Psychedelic Memoir.
Leapfrogging off the book, Lorinczi returns to the Alembic with storyteller and filmmaker Mareesa Stertz for an interactive exploration of the book’s most provocative themes: the transformative power of sharing our stories, the lack of initiation in Western culture, and the power of nonlinear modes of exploration, including creative writing, dreamwork, and psychedelic journeying. If previous events are any guide, this gathering will be a provocative and liberating exploration of the facets of family and self that so often remain shrouded. Show up ready to bask in emotionally resonant storytelling—and to share what it illuminates in your own backstory.
Seth Lorinczi at The Drumlin (In Conjunction with Ridgecrest Books)
Can trauma be inherited…and can psychedelics help us heal it? These questions form the central core of Death Trip: A Post-Holocaust Psychedelic Memoir, by Seth Lorinczi (Spiral Path Collective, 2024). A marriage story, a search for meaning in the wake of the Holocaust, and a struggle to release the weight of ancestral trauma, Death Trip takes readers from the ayahuasca basements of Portland’s psychedelic underground to the darkest days of the Second World War.

Seth Lorinczi at Chochmat HaLev
If you’re interested in the intersection of intergenerational trauma and psychedelic therapy, this is one night you won’t want to miss. Authoer Seth Lorinczi joins the congregation at Berkeley’s Chochmat HaLev synagogue to discuss Death Trip: A Post-Holocaust Psychedelic Memoir, the first book in decades to address the scars of the Holocaust through psychedelic therapy.
A marriage story, a search for meaning, and a struggle to release the weight of ancestral trauma, Death Trip takes readers from the ayahuasca basements of the psychedelic underground to the darkest days of World War II. By turns wrenching and hilarious, it asks whether trauma can be inherited and, if so, if psychedelics can help us heal.
